Editor's summary:
As threatened last month, thousands of London Tube workers began a 24-hour strike this morning (9/7) in protest of a plan to eliminate 800 jobs and reduce the number of hours that 250 ticket offices are open. The British press describes the morning commute as "chaos" that left people "scrambling" for other transportation options.

Editor's summary:
The Greek government on Wednesday began issuing "civil mobilization orders" to striking truckers that, according to Greece's Kathimerini, essentially calls them up for army duty and forces them back to work. However, many truckers are not giving in and are refusing to return to their routes.
The biggest problem with this strike is most of these drivers are responsible for hauling fuel from refineries to the country's gas stations. And now many stations are running dry.

Editor's summary:
A strike by Greek truckers, many who deliver gas to stations, sent Greek citizens scrambling to fill their tanks Monday across the country. The deluge of people taking more fuel than normal is leaving many stations short on supplies or completely dry.
The truckers are protesting a significant change in how licenses are issued for their profession.
From the article:
Kathimerini - "Drivers waited to fill up their tanks amid fears that a strike by truckers could mean that there will be no fuel available for several days to come."

Police suspect gang members are responsible for attacks on two mass transit busses in the El Salvador capital of San Salvador Sunday night.
In the first, most vicious incident, 11 people were burned alive when the assailants set fire to a bus. At least 9 others were injured.
In the second attack gunmen opened fire on a bus, killing the driver and an 11-year-old girl.
From the article:
CNN - "Police said they suspected the incidents were linked, and that gang members were involved in the attacks. They said they had not ruled out the possibility that the buses were targeted as a reprisal against drivers who had not paid a gang-imposed toll."

Editor's summary:
Russia's RIA Novosti reports that Russia plans to install explosives detection devices in metro train stations in major cities as part of a larger plan to revamp security measures in response to the twin suicide bombings in the Moscow metro earlier this year.
However the currently available technology is far from perfect, but will be installed anyway, admits Russia's emergencies minister Sergei Shoigu, who said, "[The detectors] that we have are not very effective because they do not detect all explosive compounds. Nevertheless, we will introduce them first, and the scientists will continue working on their improvement."

Following Monday's deadly attacks on the Russian metro, several nations have placed added layers of security on their commuter rail lines and subways.
