A company called Transit Wireless will be installing the wireless technology in the subways, and then cellular phone service providers would pay Transit Wireless to carry their signals.
According to a statement on the Transit Wireless website, the company "was formed specifically to respond to the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Request for Proposals to design, market, install, own, operate and maintain a neutral, shared wireless infrastructure to provide seamless, uninterrupted commercial wireless services to...the 277 underground subway stations in New York City."

Back in April it came to light that Google's Street View cars were not only snapping photos in Germany, but were also scanning and logging private citizens' wireless local access networks (WLANs) and unique media access control (MAC) addresses. Now it turns out that Google was also capturing partial content of communications from non-password-protected WiFi networks.
Google explained in a blog post on Friday how this happened. It was a mistake.
Google goes on to say, "As soon as we became aware of this problem, we grounded our Street View cars and segregated the data on our network, which we then disconnected to make it inaccessible. We want to delete this data as soon as possible, and are currently reaching out to regulators in the relevant countries about how to quickly dispose of it."
