Firm Gets Green Light to Begin NYC Subway Cell and Wi-Fi Project
Editor's summary:
United States — The plan to bring cellular phone service and Wi-Fi to New York City's subway stations is back on track, according to a report from the NY Daily News.
A company called Transit Wireless will be installing the wireless technology in the subways, and then cellular phone service providers would pay Transit Wireless to carry their signals.
According to a statement on the Transit Wireless website, the company "was formed specifically to respond to the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Request for Proposals to design, market, install, own, operate and maintain a neutral, shared wireless infrastructure to provide seamless, uninterrupted commercial wireless services to...the 277 underground subway stations in New York City."
Unfortunately it seems that it will take up to 6 years before all 277 stations are wired.
