Online System Failing to Catch Illegal Workers
Editor's summary:
United States — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) recently contracted with Westat, an independent research firm, to review the effectiveness of the web-based E-Verify system, which allows employers to determine whether prospective employees are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and therefore legally able to work in the country. The full report can be found on the USCIS website here.
The key finding being reported on by the Wall Street Journal (registration) and AP is that E-Verify currently fails to identify illegal workers about half the time.
Of course the Fox News version of the AP story pins the use of E-Verify on Congress and the Obama administration, however the system has been used since 1996.
