Air Force Closes Legendary "Blue Cube" Base
Editor's summary:
United States — The Air Force's Onizuka Air Force Station, home of the 21st Space Operations Squadron, was ceremoniously closed Wednesday after more than four decades of service. The base, located in Sunnyvale, California, is colloquially known as the "Blue Cube" for the square, window-less building used over the years to monitor military, CIA and civilian satellites.
The 21st Space Operations Squadron has been moved to Vandenberg Air Force Base in Southern California.
From San Jose Mercury News:
"Informally, [the closing ceremony] was a reunion for hundreds who monitored satellites at the Cube in the days when the difference between good guys and bad guys was a lot clearer to most of us."
