U.S. Resuming Ties with Indonesian Army Special Forces
Editor's summary:
Indonesia — The United States military will renew ties and training activities with Indonesia's "notorious" army special forces branch known as Kopassus.
The U.S. apparently believes Indonesia has reformed a group widely criticized for human rights violations over East Timor's drive for independence in the 1990s.
From American Forces Press Service:
"Congress cut off military training assistance to Indonesia in 1992 after Indonesian security forces shot and killed East Timorese demonstrators in November 1991. The restriction was partially lifted in 1995, but military assistance programs were suspended again after violence and destruction in East Timor following an Aug. 30, 1999, referendum favoring independence from Indonesia."
